As a child, I remember riding
In the country with my folks,
In the winter, in the woods,
Among the pines and oaks.
I recall a little cottage,
At a distance from the road,
Which I couldn't see too well,
(Planned that way, on purpose, I suppose.)

In the winter in the twilight,
With flurries of soft snow,
It stirred my imagination,
And it intrigued me so.
I'd press my nose against the window,
Of the car, as we'd drive by,
I loved that little cottage then,
Though, I had no idea why.

With smoke rising from its chimney,
And its tiny windows all aglow,
I knew if I could get inside,
The cold would surely go.
I saw a fireplace of bricks,
Mugs of steaming cocoa on a tray,
A braided rug, a rocking chair,
A cat asleep there most the day.

Perhaps there was an old hound-dog,
At the doorway, shaking off the snow,
Who'd make a beeline for that fireplace,
Because he knew just where to go.
I'd try to guess who lived there,
In my cottage in the woods,
As a kid, I thought of Santa Claus,
I guess I wished he would.

I dreamed up a grandma and a grandpa,
And some folks and family,
Then one day I just decided,
No ~ that cottage was there for me.
The frozen lake in front of it,
The snow clad mountains in the rear,
That little cottage in the woods,
Had become my place of cheer.

It became my secret refuge,
I'd go there, in my mind,
Whenever life grew difficult,
Or people seemed unkind.
I never really understood,
The magic of that bungalow,
The hold it seemed to have on me,
And why it wouldn't let me go.

And now in my adult years,
That feeling's still with me,
And, when in need, I do return,
To my childhood fantasy.
It is my very special place
Its purpose now, I know,
It's where my spirit gets refreshed,
Why I need my cottage in the snow.

When I'm alone and feeling blue,
I curl up in my big chair,
I close my eyes ~ go to my cottage,
And I find God in there.
